Reviewing Dr. Yasir Qadhi's Sīrah work is one of the easiest things for me to do, despite the fact that I haven't heard every single lecture of the original. That’s because I myself was debating with Sh Yasir some of the issues that went into putting together this monumental work! And it really is monumental mashaAllah, for I know firsthand the effort it takes to do this level of research, and then to prepare it for the public with a defined chronological order. Both of these are unique achievements.
Few subjects have had as many liberties taken with it as the Sīrah: most works might not focus on authenticity, or that which is relevant to the people’s needs. Many do not making the needed distinction between facts and personal opinion and interpretation. In all of this, Sh. Yasir's Sīrah represents a combination of the best of these factors – at times his forthright opinion might not be the popular one, but that is merely an indication that his Sīrah is not a translation of some popular classical work nor a quick rehashing of standard anecdotes.
Make no mistake: this is an original piece of work, with original research and analysis. The author makes clear distinctions when traversing off the beaten path of accepted traditional opinion whilst defending himself with evidence, and often leaving the reader with excellent points of benefit regarding those opinions.
It’s enough to say that whenever I am doing my own Tarbiyyah Programs which depend so much on the Sīrah, I will always refer my students to this work of Sh Yasir’s as their number one resource. May Allah forgive the author any mistakes, reward him for all that is good, and spread its benefit even further!

This book is a lofty venture. The importance of reverting to the Sunnah cannot be understated. Over time, complacency has rooted itself in Muslim society, and we have become satisfied with the words of scholars and preachers. The words of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ are deferred, and scholarly books are given precedence. We must reconnect with the Sunnah directly and renew our relationship with the Prophet ﷺ. The best way to do this is to read his sīrah, emulate his lifestyle, and learn from the invaluable lessons throughout the sīrah.
The most praiseworthy feature of the book is its frequent citing of the Qur’an. The Word of Allah is supreme, and it is the primary source of our guidance. The sīrah can only be understood in light of the Qur’an itself. I urge readers to seek guidance directly from the Qur’an itself. Reading the sīrah is an effective way to contextualise the Qur’an and appreciate the setting upon which the Qur’an was revealed. The two go hand-in-hand, and it is imperative to prioritise the Qur’an and Sunnah in our lives.
Dr Yasir has conducted original research, which is a welcomed effort. Every generation must analyse the Qur’an and Sunnah in the context of their time and place. This requires an understanding of the sacred texts as well as an appreciation for the nuances of their society.
I am also pleased to see the high level of academic integrity. Providing 1,172 references is a painstaking endeavour, but a necessary one. Far too often the masses are lured by weak and fabricated narrations, especially from preachers and storytellers. As the Prophet ﷺ said, “It is enough of a lie for a man to narrate everything he hears.” The scholars’ job is to authenticate sources before disseminating them.

About the Authors
Dr Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, where he completed a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering. Thereafter, he pursued Islamic Studies at the University of Madinah, completing a BA in Hadith Sciences and an MA in Islamic Theology. He then undertook his PhD in Islamic Studies from Yale University. He is currently the Dean of The Islamic Seminary of America and resides with his family in Dallas, Texas.
Dr Salah Sharief completed a PhD in Law from the University of Leeds while studying Islam under the tutelage of Dr Akram Nadwi. He also studied in Egypt full-time for four years. Salah is also an entrepreneur and writer, founding Wordsmiths, a bespoke translation company; and Sawti, the world’s first Islamic audiobook app.

Is this a transcript of the video series?
This is certainly not a transcript. 2,000 hours were spent in carefully crafting the adaptation. Every word is different to the series, but the meaning is retained.

Is it suitable for beginners?
While the book is loaded with benefit for all, it is still suitable for beginners. Extra care was taken to keep the language plain, simple, and easy to read.

Are non-Muslims allowed to read this?
Of course! The book was written for Muslims to strengthen their relationship with the Prophet ﷺ, but it also serves as a useful tool for non-Muslims to learn about Islam.

Is it suitable for children?
We have received feedback from 10-12 year-olds who benefitted greatly from the book—they especially enjoyed the illustrations. That being said, each child develops at their own pace. If children find it difficult, perhaps the book can be read to them, or they can start on a children’s book and work their way up.

Does it include the Shaykh’s famous tangents?
We’re afraid not! We know that everyone loves his tangents and looks forward to them, but after much deliberation, we realised that it is not as suitable in book-format. This will be a timeless classic inshaAllah, so it needed to flow as a chronological account.

Will this book help my understanding of the Qur’an?
Absolutely. Qur’anic verses have been woven into the text throughout the book. After reading this book, you will better understand the context in which the Qur’an was revealed. After all, the Qur’an and the Sirah should go hand-in-hand!

Why is there no Arabic script?
While it would have been lovely to include the Arabic text of the Qur’an and Hadiths, it would break up the text and the flow of the book. We wanted to ensure an immersive reading experience, as if you were transported into the life of the Prophet ﷺ. That’s why we’ve opted to keep the format clean, but we’ve referenced every single verse and Hadith so you may refer to them if needed.
